European Photography Jamboree

WHAT? European Photography Jamboree, open public event, with photography demonstrations (wet plate collodion, albumen printing, carbon printing, etc), hiking tours, exhibitions, talks, projections and performances beside a bone fire with acoustic music.

WHO? Open for public, for photographers and lovers of photography

WHEN? 29th, 30th and 31st of July 2016

WHERE? In the middle of Kočevski rog, Slovenia, in one of the deepest forest of Europe

ACCOMMODATION? Camping places and rooms will be available. Nearest B&B are 20 minutes drive, in the valley.

FOOD & DRINKS? Food & drinks will be available, but not for free. Campers could prepare their own food on fireplaces.

SUMMERY OF THE PROGRAM?
Three day event is devoted to photography and environmentalism. Its purpose is to invite photographers and other photography lovers to spend a weekend in the middle of deep forest, far from civilisation, where not even mobile phone networks can reach you. During this weekend we will have hiking tours, exhibition of camera-obscura photographs in a cave, cave performance on a theme Plato’s cave, demonstration of various photographic processes, talks dealing with philosophical questions on photography, projections, survival techniques, storytelling, observing stars and beside a bone fire and acoustic music enjoy the peacefulness of the eternal forest.

Our intention is to raise issues of environmentalism and photography. The event is international and its content is for free. Nevertheless the event depend on volunteerism, so we welcome any donation either in money or with your time.

HOW MUCH? The event and it’s program is open for public and free of charge. The camping, accommodation, food and drinks will be available for purchasing.

POVZETEK PROGRAMA?

Mednarodni fotografski dogodek, z demonstracijami fotografskih procesov (mokri kolodij na steklu, solna fotografija, beljačna fotografija,…), pohodi, razstave, predavanja, projekcije in performansi. Vse to se bo odvijalo v globini Kočevskega roga ob tabornem ognju, s akustično glasbo.  V programu smo zastavili pohod v jamo, kjer bo razstava podob iz camere obscure in performans na temo Platonova jama. Pod milim nebom bomo izvajali demonstracije fotografskih procesov iz 19. stoletja, uživali v izredno kvalitetnih projekcijah 6×6 diapozitivov, poslušali navdihujoče govore in ob tabornem ognju, ob spremljavi akustične glasbe, se prepustili roškemu miru.

Dogodek temelji na ozaveščanju okoljevarstva, neposrednem doživljaju Kočevskega roga in fotografiji. Vabimo vse, ki želijo doživeti fotografijo, kulturo in naravo na zelo drugačen, odklopljen način. Dogodek je bezplačen, temelji na prostovoljstvu, in hvaležni bomo za vsako prostovoljno donacijo.

NASTANITEV? Na voljo bo možnost kampiranja in spanja na skupnih ležiščih. Najbližji B&B je oddaljen približno 20 minut vožnje.

3/3 Advanced Darkroom Workshop

20140119_1606 This is the third out of three sequential workshops. In this workshop we print the negatives we have done either in the past days at the workshop or negatives that we will bring from home. We will make silver-gelatine enlargements from glass or film negatives up to 8×10″ format and salt print contact copies from the collodion or film negatives.

WHAT?
Two days photography workshop in the best darkroom that I know, at VIST College in Ljubljana. Each of the participants will make several contact copies, on silver-gelatine and as a salt print process. Each of the participants will make a big format enlargement. One enlargement 50 x70 cm is included in the the price of the workshop, but it is possible to print a photograph 100 x 150 cm. Then we will tone our prints and learn advanced toning technique of split toning with sulphide and selenium toners.

The workshop is limited to five people, but still we expect that we will have a nice mixture of collodion and film photographers.

HOW MUCH?
Two day workshop costs 350 EUR and that includes all material costs, from large format silver-gelatine photo papers, salt print chemistry, toners (sulphide, selenium, gold-chloride). The prints will be printed in different sizes, each of the participants will make one big print size 50x70cm. Printing a print size 100×150 cm is possible, upon additional charge of 100 EUR. The price does not include food and accommodation.

The workshop is limited to five participants and you get your place by paying the reservation of 100 EUR. The rest you pay at the start of the workshop. The reservation fee is not refundable.

This is the second out of three sequential workshops. In this workshop will do a photography expedition in deep forest, even to the edge of the oldest virgin forest in Europe. Out of respect we will not enter the virgin forest, but we will hike on it’s edge, the protected area surrounding the virgin forest that is just as photogenic. The transport for cameras, tripods and preprepared plates will be organised, hopefully with mules, also lodging, drinks and food will be organised. In the evening, under the stars, by the bone-fire, we will have a slide projection from 6×6 slides and a talk.

WHAT?

Two days photography expedition in deep forest, with lodging, food, drinks and transportation.

WHERE?

Kočevski rog, Slovenia.

WHEN?

30th of April and 1st of May, 2016.

WHO?

The hiking photography expedition is open to all photographers, dealing with any kind of photography. We expect that we will have a nice mixture of dry collodion plate photographers, large format film photographers, film photographers and also digital photographers.

1/3 Wet & Dry plate Collodion Negative

20130612_4045This is the first in the series of three sequential workshops. First there days we will be working on collodion negatives, preparing a set of negatives for the next two days, when we will do a photography expedition in deep forest, even to the edge of the oldest virgin forest in Europe. The transport for cameras, tripod and preprepared plates will be organised, hopefully with mules.  The third part of the workshop will be happening in the best darkroom that I know, at VIST college where we could do huge silver-gelatin prints with 8×10″ enlarger and / or salt print contact copies.

WHAT?

Three days advanced workshop of wet plate collodion negative process and dry collodion negatives. The negative we will proof print as silver-gelatin  prints and salt prints.

WHERE?

Dolenjske Toplice, Slovenia.

WHEN?

27th, 28th and 29th of April 2016.

WHO?

Wet plate collodion photographers who have know how to make an ambrotype or a tintype and are ready to move on to the next level.

  • Reviewing examples of negatives and prints we are expected to be making during the workshop
  • Preparation of chemistry and cleaning plates
  • The making of the first wet plate negatives
  • Learning how to make different densities of wet plate negatives
  • How to redevelop a negative
  • Varnishing glass negatives

DAY TWO

  • What light is appropriate for wet plate negative and how to work in inappropriate light
  • Making a portrait with ambient light
  • Making a portrait with studio flashes
  • The goal is that each participant will make several negatives with different densities for different printing processes.
  • Redeveloping. The second development after fixing, for boosting density of collodion negative.
  • Preparing dry collodion negatives.

DAY THREE

  • Exposing and developing dry collodion negatives.
  • Preparing more dry collodion negatives (for the expedition)
  • Making salt print and silver-gelatine contact copies
  • Toning with gold-chloride toner
  • Waxing salt prints

This is video from our five day workshop on wet plate collodium negative with salt and albumen printing. It happened in August 2015 in Slovenia. The first day was introduction with first wet plate collodion negatives. Second day was raining, so we went to Studio Pelikan, one of the best preserved skylight studios in Europe, where we were making collodion negative portraits. Third day we were making salt prints, fourth day we went to shoot outdoor and had some rafting. On the last day we learned albumen printing and collodion chloride printing processes.
