Title: Beauty and the Time (On Glass)
What: Contemporary picture made at the skylight Studio Pelikan, entitled Beauty and the Time.
Technique: It’s a carbon print on glass from a collodion negative. Backed with double mat, one is yellowish white and the other is olive green. While shooting the image, the wet plate collodion negative got damaged. During the development, the collodion layer peeled off the glass and it also cracked. I’ve damaged it even more, to get the result you see.
Size: Format of the image is 12x17cm or 5×7″, the whole piece with mating is 20x25cm or 8×10″.
Edition: Unlimited edition, although it takes days to make a single carbon print, so I don’t expect to make more then a dozen prints from that negative.
Personal mark: On the computer screen, the yellow hue looks too strong, but in person, I prefer this yellow version on glass from the more neutral version on the paper.
A beautiful carbon print of a beautiful young girl, photographed in the skylight Studio Pelikan. The effect of cracked negative happened when collodion layer with the image peeled off the glass. The emulsion was cracked in the middle. The image was terrible, so I’ve decided to tear the opposite corner too. Somewhat controllable I’ve damaged the negative to this shape and consequently this is definitely one of my favourite images.
